The Los Angeles Flute Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1983 by four accomplished flutists who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the possibilities of the flute as a solo and ensemble instrument. The founding members of the Los Angeles Flute Quartet were Sheridon Stokes, Susan Greenberg, David Shostac, and Jim Walker. All four musicians were highly respected in the classical music world and had extensive experience performing with major orchestras and ensembles. Stokes and Greenberg were both members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, while Shostac and Walker were principal flutists with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and virtuosic performances. They were known for their ability to seamlessly blend classical repertoire with contemporary works, and their concerts often featured world premieres of new compositions. The Los Angeles Flute Quartet also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and the Kronos Quartet. Over the years, the Los Angeles Flute Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. They have been featured at the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival, among others. The quartet has also toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, earning critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences wherever they go. In addition to their live performances, the Los Angeles Flute Quartet has released several recordings that showcase their versatility and artistry. Their debut album, "Flute Force," was released in 1986 and featured works by Bach, Mozart, and Piazzolla, as well as contemporary composers such as William Kraft and Joan Tower. The quartet's subsequent albums, including "Flute Flight" and "Flute Salad," continued to showcase their eclectic repertoire and virtuosic playing. The Los Angeles Flute Quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 1990, they were awarded the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award, which recognizes outstanding young chamber music ensembles. They have also been featured on National Public Radio's "Performance Today" and have been the subject of several television documentaries. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Los Angeles Flute Quartet has remained committed to their mission of exploring the possibilities of the flute as a chamber music instrument. The current members of the quartet are Susan Greenberg, Rachel Mellis, Sara Andon, and Catherine Del Russo. All four musicians are accomplished flutists with extensive experience performing with major orchestras and ensembles. The Los Angeles Flute Quartet continues to perform regularly and to push the boundaries of what is possible with the flute as a chamber music instrument. Their innovative programming and virtuosic playing have earned them a devoted following and a place among the most respected classical music ensembles in the world.
