Cary John Franklin was a renowned American composer and conductor, born on October 1, 1959, in New York City. He was raised in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Franklin's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Franklin began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and violin. He later attended the Juilliard School, where he studied composition and conducting. During his time at Juilliard, Franklin was mentored by renowned composers such as Milton Babbitt and Elliott Carter. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Franklin began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras across the United States. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative programming and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. In addition to his work as a conductor, Franklin was also a prolific composer. His compositions were known for their complexity and their use of unconventional instrumentation. Franklin was particularly interested in exploring the boundaries between different musical genres, and his works often incorporated elements of jazz, rock, and world music. One of Franklin's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1992. The symphony is a complex and challenging work, featuring intricate rhythms and unconventional harmonies. Despite its difficulty, the symphony was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it cemented Franklin's reputation as one of the most innovative composers of his generation. Another notable work by Franklin is his opera, The Tempest.
