Born on December 27, 1952, in New York City, Tovah grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Sidney Feldshuh, was a violinist and her mother, Lillian Kaplan Feldshuh, was a pianist. Tovah's parents were both Holocaust survivors who had fled Europe during World War II. They instilled in their daughter a love for music and the arts from a young age. Tovah began her musical training at the age of three, studying piano with her mother. She later took up the violin and studied with her father. Tovah's talent for music was evident from a young age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She made her debut as a soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the age of twelve, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Despite her early success as a musician, Tovah decided to pursue a career in acting. She attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied theater and graduated with a degree in drama. Tovah went on to study at the HB Studio in New York City, where she honed her acting skills. Tovah's career as an actress took off in the 1970s, when she began appearing in off-Broadway productions. She made her Broadway debut in 1973 in the musical "Cyrano," playing the role of Roxane. Tovah went on to appear in a number of other Broadway productions, including "Yentl," "Lend Me a Tenor," and "Golda's Balcony." Despite her success as an actress, Tovah never lost her love for music.
