Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble is a renowned classical music group that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over five decades. The ensemble was founded by Edward Tarr, a Swiss trumpeter, conductor, and musicologist, in 1965. Edward Tarr was born on June 15, 1936, in Norwich, Connecticut, USA. He grew up in a musical family, and his father was a trumpet player. Tarr started playing the trumpet at a young age and showed exceptional talent. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and later at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. Tarr's passion for early music led him to explore the Baroque trumpet, an instrument that had fallen out of use for centuries. He became one of the pioneers of the Baroque trumpet revival in the 1960s and 1970s. Tarr's research and performances on the Baroque trumpet helped to revive interest in the instrument and its repertoire. In 1965, Tarr founded the Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble, which consisted of some of the finest brass players in Europe. The ensemble's repertoire focused on early music, particularly the music of the Baroque period. The ensemble's unique sound, which blended the warm tones of the brass instruments with the crisp articulation of the Baroque trumpet, quickly gained popularity. The Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble made their debut performance in 1966 at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. The ensemble's performance was well-received, and they were invited to perform at other major festivals in Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Berliner Festwochen. The ensemble's first recording, "Music for Brass from the Courts of England and Germany," was released in 1968. The recording featured music by composers such as Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, and Johann Sebastian Bach. The recording was a critical and commercial success and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading brass ensembles in Europe. Over the years, the Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. The ensemble has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was their performance at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony, where they played a fanfare composed by John Williams. The performance was watched by millions of people around the world and helped to raise the ensemble's profile. The Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1972, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of "Music for Brass from the Courts of England and Germany." In 1986, Tarr was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to music. In addition to his work with the Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble, Tarr has also had a successful solo career as a trumpeter and conductor. He has recorded over 100 albums and has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras. Tarr has also written several books on music, including "The Trumpet" and "The Baroque Trumpet." Despite his many achievements, Tarr remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
