London Wind Soloists is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The ensemble was founded in 1988 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for wind music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other classical music groups. The founding members of London Wind Soloists were all accomplished musicians in their own right, having performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. The original members included Michael Collins on clarinet, Richard Hosford on oboe, Robin O'Neill on bassoon, and Michael Thompson on horn. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include other talented musicians, but the core group of Collins, Hosford, O'Neill, and Thompson has remained constant. One of the hallmarks of London Wind Soloists is their commitment to performing a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary, and from well-known pieces to lesser-known gems. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky, as well as contemporary composers like John Adams and Mark-Anthony Turnage. London Wind Soloists has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the Wigmore Hall in London, as well as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ensemble has also been featured at numerous music festivals, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Aldeburgh Festival. One of the highlights of London Wind Soloists' career was their performance at the 1994 Proms, where they performed Mozart's Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, K. 361, also known as the "Gran Partita." The performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, with The Guardian calling it "a performance of rare beauty and refinement." In addition to their live performances, London Wind Soloists has also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mozart's Serenade No. 10, which was released in 1995. The ensemble's recordings have been praised for their technical precision, musicality, and the unique sound that the ensemble is able to create. Over the years, London Wind Soloists has received numerous awards and accolades for their exceptional performances. In 1990, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Ensemble Award, and in 1995, they were awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Ensemble for their recording of Mozart's Serenade No. 10. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other awards, including the Classical Brit Award for Ensemble/Orchestral Album of the Year in 2004. Despite their many accomplishments, London Wind Soloists remains committed to their mission of creating exceptional music and sharing it with audiences around the world. The ensemble continues to perform regularly, both in the UK and internationally, and they remain one of the most respected and admired classical music ensembles in the world.
