The Wim Mertens Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded by Belgian composer and pianist Wim Mertens in 1980. The ensemble has undergone several changes in its lineup over the years, but has consistently featured a mix of classical and contemporary instruments, including piano, strings, woodwinds, and percussion. Mertens, who was born in Neerpelt, Belgium in 1953, began his musical career as a jazz pianist before turning to classical composition in the late 1970s. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style, which blended minimalist and experimental elements with traditional classical forms. In 1980, Mertens formed the Wim Mertens Ensemble to perform his compositions live. The original lineup included Mertens on piano, Dirk Descheemaeker on violin, and Vincent Royer on viola. The ensemble's early performances were well-received, and they quickly gained a following in Belgium and beyond. Over the years, the Wim Mertens Ensemble has undergone several changes in its lineup. Some of the musicians who have performed with the ensemble include Johan Vandendriessche on clarinet, Eric Sleichim on saxophone, and Ludo Mariën on percussion. Despite these changes, the ensemble has remained true to Mertens' vision of blending classical and contemporary elements in his compositions. Their music is characterized by its use of repetitive patterns, unconventional harmonies, and unexpected shifts in tempo and dynamics. The Wim Mertens Ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have also collaborated with a number of other artists, including choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and filmmaker Peter Greenaway. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their 1999 concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, which was recorded and released as the album "Educes Me." The album features some of Mertens' most popular compositions, including "Struggle for Pleasure" and "Close Cover." The Wim Mertens Ensemble has also received a number of awards and honors over the years. In 1999, Mertens was awarded the title of Cultural Ambassador of Flanders by the Flemish government. The ensemble has also been nominated for several awards, including the Belgian Music Industry Award and the Cannes Soundtrack Award. Despite their success, the Wim Mertens Ensemble has remained relatively unknown outside of classical music circles. However, their unique blend of classical and contemporary elements continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
