Francisco Escalada was a renowned classical music composer from the Philippines. He was born on October 10, 1911, in San Fernando, Pampanga, to a family of musicians. His father, Jose Escalada, was a bandmaster, and his mother, Maria de la Paz, was a pianist. Francisco was the youngest of their six children. Francisco showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was also exposed to the music of his father's band, which played at local fiestas and other events. At the age of six, Francisco began taking piano lessons from his mother, who recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music. In 1922, Francisco's family moved to Manila, where he continued his music studies. He attended the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano with Jose Conseco and composition with Antonio Molina. He also studied harmony and counterpoint with Francisco Buencamino Sr. and orchestration with Nicanor Abelardo. In 1931, Francisco graduated from the conservatory with a degree in music. He then began his career as a composer and pianist, performing in concerts and composing music for various ensembles. He also taught music at the Philippine Women's University and the University of the Philippines. Francisco's music was influenced by both Western classical music and Philippine folk music. He incorporated elements of traditional Philippine music, such as the use of indigenous instruments and rhythms, into his compositions. His music was also characterized by its lyricism, harmonic richness, and emotional depth. One of Francisco's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1949. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, with sweeping melodies and intricate harmonies. It has been performed by many pianists, including Cecile Licad and Rudolf Ganz. Another notable work by Francisco is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1953. The symphony is a grand and sweeping work, with lush orchestration and soaring melodies. It has been performed by many orchestras, including the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the Manila Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his concert works, Francisco also composed music for film and television. He wrote the scores for several classic Filipino films, including "Genghis Khan" and "Hindi Ako Susuko." He also composed the theme music for the popular television show "John en Marsha." Throughout his career, Francisco received many awards and honors for his contributions to music. He was awarded the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1965 and the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 1989. He was also inducted into the Order of National Artists of the Philippines in 1997, the highest honor given to Filipino artists. Francisco continued to compose music until his death on March 31, 1998, at the age of 86. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
