Dorothy Sarnoff was a renowned American classical music artist, known for her exceptional vocal abilities and captivating stage presence. Born on February 25, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York, Sarnoff grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her father was a cantor, and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged their daughter to pursue her passion for music from a young age. Sarnoff began her formal music training at the age of 12, studying voice with renowned vocal coach, William Thorner. She quickly developed a reputation as a prodigious talent, and by the time she was 16, she was performing professionally in concerts and recitals throughout New York City. In 1932, Sarnoff made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, where she performed the role of the First Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." The performance was a resounding success, and Sarnoff quickly became a sought-after performer in the classical music world. Over the next several years, Sarnoff continued to perform in concerts and operas throughout the United States and Europe, earning critical acclaim for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. In 1936, she was awarded the prestigious Naumburg Award for her outstanding contributions to the world of classical music. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Sarnoff continued to perform in operas and concerts, but she also began to branch out into other areas of the entertainment industry. She appeared in several Broadway productions, including "The King and I" and "The Sound of Music," and she also made numerous appearances on television and in films. Despite her success in these other areas, Sarnoff remained committed to her first love, classical music. In 1960, she founded the Dorothy Sarnoff Concerts, a series of performances that showcased some of the world's most talented classical musicians. The concerts were a huge success, and they helped to raise the profile of classical music in the United States. In addition to her work as a performer, Sarnoff was also a respected vocal coach and teacher.
