Karlis Baumanis was a Latvian composer who lived from 1835 to 1905. He was born in the small town of Krimulda, which is located in the northern part of Latvia. Baumanis was the son of a local schoolteacher, and he showed an early interest in music. He began playing the piano at a young age and quickly developed a talent for the instrument. Baumanis received his early musical education in Riga, the capital city of Latvia. He studied at the Riga Music School, where he learned the basics of music theory and composition. After completing his studies, Baumanis began working as a music teacher in various schools throughout Latvia. He also continued to compose music in his spare time. Baumanis was one of the first Latvian composers to incorporate folk music into his works, and this helped to establish him as a leading figure in the country's musical scene. One of Baumanis's most famous works is his opera "Roze un Rudolfs" (Rose and Rudolf), which was first performed in 1879. The opera tells the story of a young couple who fall in love despite the objections of their families. "Roze un Rudolfs" was a great success and helped to establish Baumanis as one of Latvia's most important composers. Baumanis continued to compose music throughout the rest of his life. He wrote a number of choral works, including the "Latvju Dziesma" (Latvian Song), which is considered to be one of his most important works. The piece is a setting of a Latvian folk song and is characterized by its rich harmonies and soaring melodies. In addition to his choral works, Baumanis also wrote a number of instrumental pieces. One of his most famous works is his "Latvijas Himna" (Latvian Hymn), which is the national anthem of Latvia. The piece was written in 1873 and was adopted as the country's official anthem in 1920. Baumanis's music is characterized by its use of Latvian folk melodies and its nationalistic themes.
