Ellingboe attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and theory. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Minnesota. During his time at the University of Minnesota, Ellingboe studied under Dominick Argento, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, and conductor. After completing his studies, Ellingboe began his career as a music educator, teaching at several universities and colleges across the United States. He served as the Director of Choral Activities at the University of New Mexico from 1992 to 2000 and was the Director of Choral Activities at the University of South Dakota from 2000 to 2007. Ellingboe has also served as a guest conductor and clinician for numerous choral festivals and workshops throughout the United States and Canada. As a composer, Ellingboe has written over 200 works for choir, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. His compositions have been performed by some of the most prestigious ensembles in the world, including the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants, and the King's Singers.
