Johann Sebastian Bach-Stiftung, commonly known as J.S. Bach-Stiftung, is a Swiss-based organization dedicated to the performance and preservation of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The organization was founded in 2006 by Rudolf Lutz, a Swiss conductor and organist, and has since become a leading force in the world of classical music. J.S. Bach-Stiftung was born out of a desire to bring Bach's music to a wider audience and to ensure that his works were performed in a historically informed manner. The organization's mission is to perform all of Bach's cantatas, as well as other works, in their original form and with the instruments and techniques that would have been used during Bach's time. The organization's first performance took place in 2006, with a performance of Bach's cantata "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis" (BWV 21) in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Since then, J.S. Bach-Stiftung has performed over 200 of Bach's cantatas, as well as other works such as the St. John Passion (BWV 245) and the Mass in B Minor (BWV 232). One of the highlights of J.S. Bach-Stiftung's performances was their 2010 performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany. This was a particularly significant performance, as the Thomaskirche was where Bach himself had worked as a cantor and where many of his works were first performed. The performance was widely praised for its authenticity and emotional power, and cemented J.S. Bach-Stiftung's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Bach's music. In addition to their performances, J.S. Bach-Stiftung has also released a number of recordings of Bach's works. These recordings have been praised for their clarity and authenticity, and have won several awards, including the International Classical Music Award and the German Record Critics' Award. J.S. Bach-Stiftung has also been recognized for its contributions to the world of classical music. In 2014, the organization was awarded the Swiss Music Prize, which is given to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Swiss music scene. The award recognized J.S. Bach-Stiftung's commitment to performing Bach's works in a historically informed manner, and its efforts to bring Bach's music to a wider audience. Overall, J.S. Bach-Stiftung has become a leading force in the world of classical music, known for its commitment to authenticity and its powerful performances of Bach's works. The organization's dedication to preserving Bach's legacy and bringing his music to new audiences ensures that his works will continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
