Artist Info
Michael Nicolas is a renowned cellist and classical music artist who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born in 1982 in New York City, Nicolas grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that he would develop a love for music at a young age. Nicolas began playing the cello when he was just four years old, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public. He attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with renowned cellist Joel Krosnick. After graduating from Juilliard, Nicolas went on to study at the Paris Conservatory with Philippe Muller. Throughout his career, Nicolas has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, and Zubin Mehta. One of Nicolas's most notable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2004. He performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto under the baton of Lorin Maazel, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. The New York Times praised his "rich, burnished tone" and his "impressive technical command." In addition to his work as a soloist, Nicolas is also a dedicated chamber musician. He is a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, a group that is dedicated to performing new and experimental music. He has also collaborated with many other chamber groups, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Emerson String Quartet. Nicolas has received many awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a successful career in classical music. He has also been a recipient of the Juilliard School's Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music. In addition to his work as a performer, Nicolas is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, and he has given masterclasses around the world. He is passionate about passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of musicians. Nicolas is also committed to promoting new and experimental music. He has premiered many new works by contemporary composers, including Kaija Saariaho, Matthias Pintscher, and Steve Reich. He is particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of the cello as a solo instrument, and he has commissioned many new works that showcase the cello's versatility and range. Overall, Michael Nicolas is a highly respected and accomplished cellist who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. His dedication to his craft, his commitment to promoting new music, and his passion for teaching make him a true asset to the classical music community.More....
