United KingdomBirth:December 9, 1934Death:1996Genre:ChoralConcertoAlan Ridout was a British composer who was born on July 16, 1934, in Kent, England. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and organist, and his mother was a singer. Ridout began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Ridout attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Lennox Berkeley and piano with Harold Craxton. He graduated with a degree in composition in 1956 and went on to study at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Ridout's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of Stravinsky and Hindemith. He was also interested in the music of the Baroque period and often incorporated elements of Baroque music into his compositions. Ridout's music was characterized by its clarity of form and structure, as well as its use of counterpoint and rhythmic complexity. One of Ridout's early works was his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, which he composed in 1955. The piece was well-received and helped establish Ridout as a promising young composer. He went on to compose a number of other chamber works, including a String Quartet and a Sonata for Violin and Piano. In the 1960s, Ridout began to focus more on choral music. He was particularly interested in setting texts from the Bible and other religious texts. One of his most famous choral works is his Canticle of the Rose, which was composed in 1969. The piece is a setting of a medieval poem and features intricate vocal lines and rich harmonies. Ridout also composed a number of works for orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1963. The piece is characterized by its use of complex rhythms and its incorporation of folk melodies. Ridout's Symphony No. 2, which was composed in 1971, is a more introspective work that features a solo violin. In addition to his work as a composer, Ridout was also a respected music educator. He taught at a number of institutions, including the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to achieve their full potential. Ridout continued to compose throughout his life, and his later works were characterized by a more experimental approach. He was particularly interested in electronic music and incorporated electronic sounds into some of his compositions. One of his last works was his String Quartet No. 5, which was composed in 1993. Alan Ridout passed away on June 18, 1996, at the age of 61. He left behind a legacy of innovative and inspiring music, as well as a generation of students who were inspired by his teaching. His music continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
