From a young age, James showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He started playing the piano at the age of five and quickly developed a natural talent for the instrument. James attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time. He excelled in his studies and graduated with honors. After completing his studies, James began his career as a concert pianist, performing in various venues across the UK. In 1975, James made his debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was a huge success, and James received critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of James's rise to fame as a world-class pianist. Over the years, James performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera House, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of James's most memorable performances was his rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1982. The performance was recorded and released as an album, which went on to become one of the best-selling classical music albums of all time. James's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its emotional depth and technical brilliance. Throughout his career, James received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He also received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra) in 1991 for his recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas.
