Katie Barrick was born on May 12, 1985, in London, England. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Barrick showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the cello. Barrick attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composer, Sir Harrison Birtwistle. During her time at the academy, Barrick composed several pieces that were well-received by her peers and professors. Her compositions were noted for their intricate harmonies and use of unconventional instruments. After graduating from the academy, Barrick began working as a freelance composer, writing music for film, television, and theatre productions. Her first major work was the score for the 2008 film, "The Edge of Love," which starred Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller. The score was praised for its haunting melodies and emotional depth. In 2010, Barrick released her first album, "Echoes of the Past," which featured a collection of her original compositions. The album was a critical success, with many reviewers noting Barrick's ability to blend classical and contemporary styles seamlessly. Over the years, Barrick has composed music for a wide range of projects, including ballets, operas, and symphonies. One of her most notable works is the ballet, "The Snow Queen," which was commissioned by the Royal Ballet in 2014. The ballet was based on the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and featured stunning choreography by Liam Scarlett. Barrick's score was praised for its evocative melodies and use of traditional folk instruments. In 2016, Barrick was commissioned to write a symphony to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death.
