His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music at a young age. Fernández started playing the piano when he was only four years old, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. He received his formal music education at the National School of Music in Havana, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue, Teresita Junco.
