Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1975. The orchestra is based in Cooperstown, New York, and is known for its performances of opera and other classical music genres. The founding of Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra was the result of a collaboration between the Glimmerglass Opera Company and the New York State Council on the Arts. The orchestra was created to provide live music for the Glimmerglass Opera Company's productions, which were held in a tent on the shores of Otsego Lake. Over the years, the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra has had many members, including some of the most talented musicians in the world. Some of the orchestra's main members have included conductor Stewart Robertson, concertmaster Joseph Genualdi, and principal cellist David Ying. One of the highlights of the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra's career was its performance of Benjamin Britten's "Peter Grimes" in 1988. The production was directed by John Dexter and starred tenor Jon Vickers in the title role. The performance was widely acclaimed and helped to establish the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the world. Another major highlight of the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra's career was its performance of Richard Wagner's "Ring Cycle" in 2013. The production was directed by Francesca Zambello and featured a cast of world-class singers, including Eric Owens, Deborah Voigt, and Jay Hunter Morris. The performance was widely praised for its musical excellence and its innovative staging. In addition to its performances of opera, the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra has also been recognized for its performances of other classical music genres. In 2007, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for its recording of John Corigliano's "Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan."
