Edvard Bræin was a Norwegian composer who was born on December 17, 1924, in Bergen, Norway. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Eivind Bræin, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Ingeborg Bræin, was a pianist. Edvard Bræin showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Bræin studied music at the Bergen Conservatory and later at the Oslo Conservatory. He also studied composition with the renowned Norwegian composer, Bjarne Brustad. Bræin's early works were influenced by the Norwegian folk music tradition and the works of composers such as Grieg and Sibelius. Bræin's first major work was his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1949. The symphony was well-received and established Bræin as a promising young composer. He went on to compose several more symphonies, including Symphony No. 2, which was premiered in 1953, and Symphony No. 3, which was premiered in 1958. In addition to his symphonies, Bræin composed a number of other works for orchestra, including concertos for piano, violin, and cello. He also composed chamber music, choral music, and music for the stage. One of his most famous works is his ballet, "The Tempest," which was premiered in 1964. Bræin's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and use of Norwegian folk music elements. His works often have a pastoral quality, evoking the natural beauty of Norway's landscape. Bræin was also known for his use of unconventional instrumentation, such as the accordion and the mandolin. Bræin was a prolific composer, and his works were performed by orchestras and ensembles throughout Norway and Europe. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Norwegian music, including the King's Medal of Merit in gold and the Order of St. Olav. Bræin continued to compose music until his death on December 10, 1976, at the age of 51. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and appreciated by audiences around the world.
