Freddy de Rivaz was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1922, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was the son of a Swiss father and a French mother, and his family had a strong musical background. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which inspired him to pursue a career in music. De Rivaz began his musical training at a young age, studying piano and violin. He showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. At the age of 12, he made his debut as a soloist with the Geneva Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. De Rivaz continued his studies at the Geneva Conservatory, where he focused on piano performance and composition. He also studied with renowned pianists such as Alfred Cortot and Artur Schnabel. During this time, he won several awards and competitions, including the Geneva Conservatory's top prize for piano performance. In 1942, de Rivaz made his debut in Paris, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and he was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, de Rivaz performed extensively throughout Europe, playing with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He also began to develop a reputation as a composer, with several of his works being performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles. In 1950, de Rivaz made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and de Rivaz was invited to perform with several other major American orchestras. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, de Rivaz continued to perform and compose, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin, and his recordings of their works remain highly regarded to this day. In 1970, de Rivaz retired from performing and focused on teaching and composing. He taught at several prestigious music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He also continued to compose, with several of his works being commissioned and performed by major orchestras and ensembles. De Rivaz passed away on January 1, 1998, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest classical music artists of the 20th century, with a career that spanned over five decades and included countless memorable performances and compositions.
