Michael Moser was born on May 12, 1960, in Vienna, Austria. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Moser started playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a talent for music. He studied at the Vienna Music Academy and later at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, where he received his diploma in cello performance. Moser's early career was focused on performing as a cellist, and he played with various orchestras and ensembles in Austria and abroad. However, he also had a strong interest in composition, and he began to write his own music in the 1980s. Moser's early works were influenced by the avant-garde and experimental music of the time, and he often used extended techniques and unconventional forms in his compositions. In the 1990s, Moser's style began to evolve, and he started to incorporate more traditional elements into his music. He became interested in the music of the Baroque and Classical periods, as well as in folk music from various cultures. Moser's compositions from this period often feature a blend of modern and traditional elements, with complex rhythms and harmonies combined with simple melodies and folk-inspired motifs. One of Moser's most significant works from this period is his cello concerto, which he composed in 1996. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the cello, with intricate passages and complex rhythms that require a high level of technical skill from the performer. However, the concerto also has a lyrical quality, with beautiful melodies and harmonies that showcase the expressive capabilities of the cello. Moser continued to explore new musical ideas and techniques in the 2000s, and his compositions became even more experimental and avant-garde. He began to incorporate electronic elements into his music, using computers and other technology to create complex soundscapes and textures. Moser's works from this period often feature a blend of acoustic and electronic sounds, with the cello and other instruments interacting with electronic sounds and effects. One of Moser's most notable works from this period is his piece "Resonant Spaces," which he composed in 2008. The piece is a site-specific work that was designed to be performed in a specific location, such as a church or a museum. The piece features a series of short musical fragments that are played by the cello and other instruments, with the sounds resonating and echoing throughout the space. The result is a haunting and immersive musical experience that blurs the boundaries between performer and audience. Moser's later works continued to push the boundaries of classical music, with a focus on exploring new sounds and textures. He often collaborated with other artists and musicians, including dancers, visual artists, and poets, to create multimedia works that combined music with other art forms. Sadly, Michael Moser passed away on December 31, 2017, at the age of 57. However, his legacy as a composer and cellist lives on, and his music continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world. Moser's contributions to the world of classical music are significant, and his innovative and experimental approach to composition has helped to expand the boundaries of what is possible in classical music.
