Albert E. Brumley was a renowned American composer of gospel music, who is best known for his iconic hymn, "I'll Fly Away." Born on October 29, 1905, in Spiro, Oklahoma, Brumley was the youngest of ten children. His parents, William and Nancy Brumley, were farmers who instilled in their children a love for music and a strong Christian faith. Brumley's musical journey began at an early age when he learned to play the guitar and mandolin. He was also an avid singer and often performed at local church events and community gatherings. Despite his love for music, Brumley initially pursued a career in teaching and worked as a schoolteacher for several years. In 1926, Brumley attended a singing convention in Texas, where he was introduced to the world of gospel music. Inspired by the music he heard, Brumley began writing his own gospel songs. His first composition, "I'll Fly Away," was written in 1929 and quickly became a popular hymn in churches across the country. Over the course of his career, Brumley wrote over 800 gospel songs, many of which have become staples in the genre. Some of his most famous compositions include "Turn Your Radio On," "Rank Strangers," and "Jesus, Hold My Hand." Brumley's music was known for its simple yet powerful lyrics and catchy melodies that resonated with audiences of all ages. In addition to his work as a composer, Brumley was also a successful music publisher. In 1948, he founded the Albert E. Brumley & Sons Music Company, which became one of the largest gospel music publishers in the world. The company continues to operate today and is run by Brumley's son, Bob. Throughout his career, Brumley received numerous accolades for his contributions to gospel music. In 1970, he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and in 1981, he was posthumously awarded the ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award. Brumley's music has been recorded by countless artists, including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Alison Krauss. Despite his success, Brumley remained humble and dedicated to his faith. He was a devout Christian who believed that his music was a way to spread the message of God's love and salvation. Brumley passed away on November 15, 1977, but his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to inspire and uplift people around the world.
