Trio Recherche is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1989 in Freiburg, Germany. The ensemble consists of three members: Melise Mellinger on violin, Lucas Fels on cello, and Martin Fahlenbock on piano. The trio is known for their innovative and experimental approach to classical music, often incorporating electronic elements and collaborating with contemporary composers. The founding members of Trio Recherche met while studying at the Musikhochschule Freiburg, and quickly discovered a shared passion for contemporary classical music. They began performing together as a trio in 1989, and soon gained a reputation for their unique and daring interpretations of modern compositions. Over the years, Trio Recherche has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Berliner Festwochen, the Salzburg Festival, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. They have also collaborated with a number of renowned composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, and Wolfgang Rihm. One of the highlights of Trio Recherche's career was their performance at the 2004 Donaueschingen Festival, where they premiered a new work by composer Rebecca Saunders. The piece, titled "a visible trace," was written specifically for the trio and featured a complex interplay of sound and silence. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and helped to cement Trio Recherche's reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting ensembles in contemporary classical music. In addition to their performances, Trio Recherche has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1996, they were awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis, one of the most prestigious awards for contemporary classical music in Germany. They have also been recognized for their recordings, including their 2007 album "Feldman: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello," which was named one of the best classical recordings of the year by The New York Times. Despite their success, Trio Recherche remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new and innovative approaches to performance. They continue to collaborate with contemporary composers and to seek out new and challenging works to add to their repertoire.
