Joan Ambrosia Dalza was a Renaissance composer and lutenist who lived in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Not much is known about her early life, including her birthplace and date of birth. However, it is believed that she was born in Italy and received her musical education there. Dalza was a skilled lutenist and composer, and her works were highly regarded during her lifetime. She is best known for her lute music, which was published in two collections: Intabolatura de lauto libro quarto and Intabolatura de lauto libro quinto. These collections contain a total of 56 pieces, including dances, fantasias, and intabulations of vocal works. One of Dalza's most famous works is the Pavana alla Venetiana, which is a dance in the style of a pavane. This piece is notable for its use of chromaticism and its intricate counterpoint. Another notable work is the Calata ala spagnola, which is a lively dance in the Spanish style. Dalza's music was highly influential during the Renaissance period, and her works were widely performed and admired. Her compositions were known for their technical skill and their ability to evoke a range of emotions in the listener. Despite her success as a composer, Dalza's life remains shrouded in mystery. It is not known whether she was married or had children, or what her personal life was like. However, her legacy as a composer and musician continues to be celebrated to this day.
