Kyriakos Kalaitzides is a Greek classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a composer, conductor, and pianist. Born on December 12, 1978, in Thessaloniki, Greece, Kalaitzides showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study music at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he earned a degree in Musicology and a diploma in Piano Performance. Kalaitzides continued his studies in music composition at the University of York in the United Kingdom, where he earned a Master of Music degree and a PhD in Composition. During his time in the UK, he also studied conducting with renowned conductor and composer George Benjamin. Kalaitzides' music is characterized by its unique blend of traditional Greek music and contemporary classical music. He draws inspiration from the rich musical heritage of Greece, incorporating elements of Greek folk music and Byzantine chant into his compositions. At the same time, he is also influenced by the works of contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Steve Reich. Kalaitzides has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a composer, including the prestigious Gaudeamus Award in 2006. He has also been commissioned to write music for a variety of ensembles and orchestras, including the London Sinfonietta, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Athens State Orchestra. In addition to his work as a composer, Kalaitzides is also an accomplished conductor and pianist.
