The Ouachita Baptist University Symphonic Band is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years. Founded in 1967, the band has become a staple of the university's music program and has gained recognition for its exceptional performances. The ensemble was founded by Dr. W. Francis McBeth, who served as the director of bands at Ouachita Baptist University from 1957 to 1996. Dr. McBeth was a highly respected composer and conductor, and his leadership helped to establish the Symphonic Band as one of the premier ensembles in the region. Over the years, the Symphonic Band has been comprised of some of the most talented musicians at Ouachita Baptist University. The ensemble is open to all students, regardless of their major, and members are selected through a rigorous audition process. The band typically consists of around 60 members, including woodwinds, brass, percussion, and auxiliary instruments. One of the highlights of the Symphonic Band's history was its performance at the 1984 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. The Midwest Clinic is one of the largest and most prestigious music conferences in the world, and the Symphonic Band was one of only a handful of college ensembles selected to perform. The band's performance was met with critical acclaim, and it helped to establish the ensemble as a national leader in the world of classical music. In addition to its performance at the Midwest Clinic, the Symphonic Band has also been recognized for its exceptional performances at other major music conferences and festivals. The ensemble has performed at the Arkansas Music Educators Association Conference, the College Band Directors National Association Conference, and the National Band Association Conference, among others. The Symphonic Band has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1995, the ensemble was named the Arkansas State Band of the Year by the Arkansas Bandmasters Association. The band has also been recognized for its outstanding performances at the Southern Region Concert Band Festival and the National Concert Band Festival. One of the hallmarks of the Symphonic Band's performances is its commitment to showcasing the works of contemporary composers. The ensemble has premiered numerous works by composers such as David Maslanka, John Mackey, and Frank Ticheli, among others. The band's dedication to new music has helped to establish it as a leader in the world of contemporary classical music. The Symphonic Band's repertoire is diverse and includes works from a wide range of musical periods and styles. The ensemble has performed everything from traditional marches and overtures to contemporary works for wind band. The band's performances are known for their technical precision, musicality, and emotional depth. In addition to its regular performances on campus, the Symphonic Band also tours regularly throughout the region and the country. The ensemble has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. The Symphonic Band's current director is Dr. Craig Hamilton, who has been with the ensemble since 2013. Dr. Hamilton is a highly respected conductor and composer, and his leadership has helped to continue the band's tradition of excellence.
