Michigan Music Works is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2010 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for performing and promoting classical music in the state of Michigan. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented and accomplished musicians in the region, including members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra, and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. The founding members of Michigan Music Works were violinist Sonia Lee, cellist Nadine Deleury, and pianist Kathryn Goodson. They were soon joined by other musicians, including violinist Hai-Xin Wu, violist Caroline Coade, and bassist Kevin Brown. Together, they set out to create a chamber music ensemble that would showcase the beauty and complexity of classical music to audiences throughout Michigan. Since its founding, Michigan Music Works has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the state, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Theater, and the University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium. The ensemble has also been featured on numerous radio programs, including WRCJ-FM and WKAR-FM. One of the highlights of Michigan Music Works' career was their performance at the 2012 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. The festival, which takes place annually in Detroit, is one of the most important events in the region's classical music calendar. Michigan Music Works was invited to perform alongside some of the world's most renowned chamber music ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Takács Quartet. Another notable performance by Michigan Music Works was their collaboration with the Michigan Opera Theatre in 2014. The ensemble was invited to perform as part of the opera company's production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." The musicians provided live accompaniment for the opera's recitatives, adding an extra layer of depth and richness to the performance. In addition to their performances, Michigan Music Works has also been recognized for their contributions to the classical music community in Michigan. In 2013, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to support their educational outreach programs. These programs include workshops and performances for students in schools throughout the state, as well as masterclasses for young musicians. Michigan Music Works has also been praised for their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity in classical music. The ensemble has made a conscious effort to feature works by composers from a wide range of backgrounds, including women and people of color. They have also collaborated with organizations such as the Sphinx Organization, which works to promote diversity in classical music. Throughout their career, Michigan Music Works has remained dedicated to their mission of bringing the beauty and complexity of classical music to audiences throughout Michigan. With their exceptional musicianship and commitment to excellence, they have become one of the most respected and beloved chamber music ensembles in the region.
