Marjory Westbury was a British classical music artist who was born on September 13, 1916, in London, England. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. Marjory showed an early interest in music and began singing at a young age. Marjory received her formal music education at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She studied under the renowned vocal coach, Roy Henderson, and made her debut in 1939 at the Royal Albert Hall. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented soprano. During World War II, Marjory performed for the troops and became a popular entertainer. She sang in concerts and on the radio, and her performances were broadcast to soldiers stationed around the world. Her music provided a much-needed escape for the soldiers, and she became known as the "Forces' Sweetheart." After the war, Marjory continued to perform and gained international recognition. She performed in concerts throughout Europe and the United States and was praised for her beautiful voice and expressive performances. She also made several recordings, including a highly acclaimed recording of Handel's Messiah. One of Marjory's most notable performances was her portrayal of the role of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute. Her performance was praised for its clarity and precision, and she became known as one of the greatest interpreters of the role. Marjory also received several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1953, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music. She was also made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 1962 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of London in 1976. She continued to perform well into her seventies and was known for her warm personality and generosity towards her fellow musicians. Marjory Westbury passed away on December 15, 1991, at the age of 75. She left behind a legacy as one of the greatest sopranos of her time and a beloved figure in the world of classical music.
