Barbara Jazwinski was born on May 12, 1965, in Warsaw, Poland. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a violinist. From a young age, Jazwinski showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the cello. Jazwinski attended the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where she studied composition under the guidance of renowned composer Krzysztof Penderecki. She also studied piano and cello performance, as well as music theory and history. During her time at the university, Jazwinski composed several works that were performed at various concerts and festivals. After graduating from the university, Jazwinski began working as a freelance composer and musician. She composed music for films, television, and theater productions, as well as for orchestras and chamber ensembles. Her works were well-received by audiences and critics alike, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young composers in Poland. In 1992, Jazwinski was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany. There, she continued her studies in composition and also learned to conduct orchestras. She composed several works during her time in Hamburg, including a symphony and a piano concerto. Jazwinski returned to Poland in 1995 and continued to compose and perform music. She also began teaching composition at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, where she had studied years earlier. Her students included several young composers who would go on to achieve success in their own right. Throughout her career, Jazwinski composed music in a variety of styles and genres. Her works ranged from solo piano pieces to large-scale orchestral works, and she often incorporated elements of Polish folk music into her compositions. She was also influenced by the works of other composers, including Penderecki, Bach, and Beethoven. Some of Jazwinski's most notable works include her Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in 1998, and her Piano Concerto No. 2, which was premiered by the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2005. She also composed several chamber works, including a string quartet and a piano trio. Jazwinski's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Polish Academy of Sciences Award for Young Composers and the Fryderyk Award for Best Classical Album. In addition to her work as a composer, Jazwinski was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She believed strongly in the importance of music education and worked tirelessly to inspire and encourage her students. Tragically, Jazwinski's life was cut short when she passed away in a car accident on December 23, 2010, at the age of 45. Her death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but her legacy lives on through her music and the many students she inspired and mentored over the years.
