Robert Buckley is a Canadian composer and arranger who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born in 1961 in Chatham, Ontario, Buckley grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He later learned to play the trumpet and the guitar, and his love for music continued to grow. Buckley attended the University of Western Ontario, where he studied music composition and theory. He also studied jazz and classical guitar, and his diverse musical background would later influence his compositions. After completing his studies, Buckley began working as a freelance composer and arranger, writing music for film, television, and the stage. One of Buckley's early successes was his work on the television series "Road to Avonlea," which aired from 1990 to 1996. Buckley composed the show's theme song and wrote many of the incidental music pieces used throughout the series. His work on "Road to Avonlea" earned him a Gemini Award for Best Original Music Score in 1993. Buckley's success on "Road to Avonlea" led to more opportunities in the film and television industry. He went on to compose music for several other television series, including "The Adventures of Shirley Holmes," "The Red Green Show," and "The Hardy Boys." He also wrote music for films such as "The Last Casino" and "The Bay of Love and Sorrows." Despite his success in the film and television industry, Buckley remained committed to composing classical music. He wrote several pieces for orchestra, including "The Great Lakes Suite," which was commissioned by the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in 2001. The suite is a tribute to the five Great Lakes and features five movements, each representing a different lake. The piece has been performed by several orchestras across Canada and the United States. In addition to his work for orchestra, Buckley has also written chamber music, choral music, and solo pieces for various instruments. One of his most popular works is "The Canadian Brass Christmas Suite," which he arranged for the Canadian Brass quintet. The suite features traditional Christmas carols arranged in a unique and playful style, and it has become a staple of the Canadian Brass's holiday repertoire. Buckley's music is known for its accessibility and its ability to appeal to a wide range of audiences. His compositions often blend elements of classical, jazz, and popular music, creating a unique and engaging sound. He has been praised for his ability to write music that is both technically challenging and emotionally resonant. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Buckley is also a respected educator. He has taught music theory and composition at several universities and colleges, including the University of Western Ontario and Humber College. He has also conducted workshops and masterclasses for young musicians across Canada and the United States. Throughout his career, Buckley has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In addition to his Gemini Award, he has received several SOCAN Awards for his film and television work. He was also awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his contributions to Canadian music. Today, Robert Buckley continues to compose and arrange music for a variety of mediums. His music can be heard in concert halls, on film and television soundtracks, and on recordings by some of the world's leading musicians.
