Born in 1972 in San Diego, California, Adler began his musical journey at a young age, studying piano and percussion. He later went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance from the University of California, San Diego, and a Master of Music degree in composition from the California Institute of the Arts. Adler's music is known for its unique blend of Western classical traditions and non-Western musical influences, particularly from Southeast Asia. He has spent extensive time studying and performing in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, and has incorporated elements of these musical traditions into his compositions. One of Adler's most notable works is his composition "Signals Intelligence," which was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered in 2007. The piece features a large ensemble of musicians playing a variety of instruments, including gamelan (a traditional Indonesian percussion ensemble), Western percussion, and electronics. The piece was praised for its innovative use of sound and its ability to seamlessly blend different musical traditions.
