The Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1991 in Michaelstein, Germany. The ensemble is named after Georg Philipp Telemann, a German Baroque composer who was born in Magdeburg, Germany in 1681. The ensemble is dedicated to performing the works of Telemann and other Baroque composers, as well as promoting the study and appreciation of Baroque music. The founding members of the Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein were a group of musicians who were studying at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, Germany. They were inspired by the music of Telemann and other Baroque composers, and wanted to form an ensemble that would specialize in this type of music. They chose the name "Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein" because Michaelstein is a small town in the Harz Mountains of Germany, where a monastery was founded in the 12th century. The monastery was later converted into a music school, and is now home to the Telemann Archive, which contains many of Telemann's original manuscripts. The main members of the Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein are a group of highly skilled musicians who specialize in playing Baroque instruments. These instruments include the harpsichord, the viola da gamba, the recorder, the baroque flute, the baroque oboe, the baroque bassoon, and the baroque trumpet. The ensemble is led by the conductor Ludger Rémy, who is also a harpsichordist and musicologist. Rémy has been with the ensemble since its founding, and has helped to shape its sound and repertoire. One of the highlights of the Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein's career was their performance of Telemann's "Tafelmusik" in 1997. "Tafelmusik" is a collection of instrumental music that was written to be played during banquets and other social events. The Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein's performance of "Tafelmusik" was highly praised by critics and audiences alike, and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading Baroque music ensembles in Germany. Another highlight of the Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein's career was their performance of Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos" in 2000. The "Brandenburg Concertos" are a collection of six instrumental works that were written by Johann Sebastian Bach in the early 18th century. The Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein's performance of the "Brandenburg Concertos" was praised for its precision, clarity, and energy, and helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the finest Baroque music ensembles in Europe. The Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein has also won several awards for their recordings of Baroque music. In 2003, they won the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Telemann's "Musique de Table." The Echo Klassik is a prestigious German music award that is given to outstanding classical music recordings. The Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein's recording of "Musique de Table" was praised for its technical excellence, musicality, and historical authenticity. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein is also involved in music education and research. They offer workshops and masterclasses for young musicians who are interested in learning about Baroque music and historical performance practices. They also collaborate with musicologists and historians to study and document the music of Telemann and other Baroque composers.
