Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra was a British classical music ensemble that was active from the 1940s to the 1960s. The ensemble was founded by Ray Martin, a British composer, arranger, and conductor who was known for his work in film and television music. Ray Martin was born on October 11, 1918, in Vienna, Austria. He moved to England with his family in the 1930s and began his career in music as a pianist and arranger. He worked for the BBC as a staff arranger and conductor in the 1940s and 1950s, and he also composed music for films and television shows. In 1947, Ray Martin formed his own ensemble, which he called Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra. The ensemble consisted of a group of talented musicians who played a variety of classical and popular music. The ensemble's main members included Ray Martin on piano and conducting, as well as a number of other musicians who played instruments such as violins, cellos, trumpets, and trombones. Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra quickly gained popularity in the UK, and they became known for their lush, romantic sound and their ability to play a wide range of musical styles. The ensemble recorded a number of albums for the Decca label, including "Ray Martin Plays for Lovers," "Ray Martin Plays the Great Film Themes," and "Ray Martin Plays the Hits of the Day." One of the highlights of Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra's career was their performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1953. The ensemble played a program of classical and popular music, and the concert was attended by a large and enthusiastic audience. The performance was also broadcast on the BBC, which helped to further increase the ensemble's popularity. Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra also received a number of awards and honors during their career. In 1955, the ensemble won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Light Orchestral Music for their recording of "Blue Tango." The ensemble also received a number of gold and silver discs for their recordings, which were popular both in the UK and internationally. Despite their success, Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra disbanded in the 1960s as the popularity of classical music began to wane. Ray Martin continued to work in music, however, and he went on to compose music for a number of films and television shows, including the popular British TV series "The Avengers." Today, Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra are remembered as one of the most popular and successful classical music ensembles of their time. Their lush, romantic sound and their ability to play a wide range of musical styles continue to be admired by music lovers around the world.
