Artist Info

The Nightingale String Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1999 by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create something unique and special. The founding members of the Nightingale String Quartet were Gunvor Sihm and Josefine Dalsgaard on violin, Marie-Louise Broholt Jensen on viola, and Louisa Schwab on cello. All four musicians had already established themselves as talented performers in their own right, having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in Europe. The quartet's name was inspired by the nightingale, a bird known for its beautiful and melodious singing. The members of the Nightingale String Quartet sought to emulate the nightingale's song through their music, creating a sound that was both enchanting and captivating. From the very beginning, the Nightingale String Quartet was committed to exploring the full range of chamber music repertoire. They performed works by both well-known and lesser-known composers, always striving to bring something new and exciting to their audiences. One of the quartet's early highlights was their performance at the 2000 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Nightingale String Quartet won first prize in the competition, which helped to launch their career and establish them as one of the most promising young ensembles in Europe. Over the years, the Nightingale String Quartet has continued to build on their success, performing at some of the most prestigious concert halls and music festivals around the world. They have collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and cellist Truls Mørk. In 2007, the Nightingale String Quartet released their debut album, featuring works by Haydn, Schubert, and Nielsen. The album was well-received by critics and helped to further establish the quartet's reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative ensembles in classical music. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Nightingale String Quartet is also committed to music education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians in Denmark and around the world, helping to inspire the next generation of chamber music performers. Today, the Nightingale String Quartet is made up of Gunvor Sihm and Josefine Dalsgaard on violin, Marie-Louise Broholt Jensen on viola, and Andreas Brantelid on cello. The quartet continues to push the boundaries of chamber music, exploring new repertoire and collaborating with other musicians to create unforgettable performances. In recognition of their exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music, the Nightingale String Quartet has received numerous awards and honors over the years. These include the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the Danish Music Critics' Prize, and the prestigious ECHO Klassik Award. Despite their many accomplishments, the members of the Nightingale String Quartet remain humble and dedicated to their craft. They continue to inspire audiences around the world with their beautiful and captivating performances, and their legacy as one of the greatest chamber music ensembles of our time is sure to endure for many years to come.
