Juice Vocal Ensemble is a British classical music ensemble that specializes in contemporary vocal music. The group was founded in 2003 by three singers: Kerry Andrew, Anna Snow, and Sarah Dacey. The ensemble has since expanded to include additional members, including sopranos Heather Cairncross and Emily Burn, mezzo-soprano Angela Hicks, and tenor Simon Littlemore. The founding members of Juice Vocal Ensemble met while studying at the University of Birmingham, where they were all members of the university choir. They shared a passion for contemporary vocal music and decided to form their own ensemble to explore this genre further. The group's name, "Juice," was chosen to reflect their fresh and vibrant approach to music-making. Juice Vocal Ensemble quickly gained a reputation for their innovative and adventurous programming, which often featured works by living composers. The group's repertoire includes a wide range of styles, from experimental vocal techniques to more traditional choral music. They have collaborated with a number of composers, including Joby Talbot, Gavin Bryars, and Errollyn Wallen. One of the highlights of Juice Vocal Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2006 BBC Proms, where they premiered a new work by composer Orlando Gough. The piece, entitled "The World Encompassed," was a choral work inspired by the voyage of Sir Francis Drake around the world. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish Juice Vocal Ensemble as one of the leading contemporary vocal ensembles in the UK. In addition to their work in the classical music world, Juice Vocal Ensemble has also collaborated with a number of other artists and musicians. They have worked with electronic musicians, jazz musicians, and even a beatboxer. The group's versatility and willingness to experiment has helped to broaden their appeal and attract new audiences. Juice Vocal Ensemble has received a number of awards and accolades throughout their career. In 2007, they were awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Chamber-Scale Composition for their performance of "The World Encompassed." They have also been nominated for several BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. In recent years, Juice Vocal Ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of contemporary vocal music. They have premiered new works by composers such as Emily Hall and Mica Levi, and have collaborated with a number of other artists and musicians. The group's commitment to innovation and experimentation has helped to establish them as one of the most exciting and dynamic vocal ensembles in the UK.
