Born in New York City in 1972, Mandel grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Mandel began playing the viola at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the best teachers in the country, including Karen Tuttle and Michael Tree, and went on to attend the Juilliard School in New York City. After graduating from Juilliard, Mandel began his professional career as a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He quickly established himself as a versatile and talented musician, and was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Over the years, Mandel has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the top chamber musicians of his generation, including Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of Mandel's career was his performance of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with the New York Philharmonic in 2004. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Mandel's reputation as one of the top violists of his generation. In addition to his work as a performer, Mandel is also a dedicated teacher and mentor.
