Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Petitgirard continued to compose and conduct, and his works were performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In 1994, Petitgirard was appointed the music director of the Orchestre Colonne, one of the oldest and most prestigious orchestras in France. Under his leadership, the orchestra experienced a period of renewed success, and Petitgirard was praised for his innovative programming and his commitment to promoting new and lesser-known works. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Petitgirard is also an accomplished pianist, and he has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras. He has recorded several albums of his own compositions, as well as works by other composers, and his recordings have received critical acclaim. Throughout his career, Petitgirard has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1999, he was awarded the Grand Prix de la Musique Symphonique by the French Ministry of Culture, and in 2000, he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, one of the highest honors in France.
