Born on February 3, 1832, in Preston, Connecticut, Doane was the son of a Baptist minister and grew up in a musical family. His father, William Doane Sr., was a composer and music teacher, and his mother, Mary, was a singer and pianist. Doane showed an early interest in music and began studying piano with his mother at a young age. He later studied with several prominent musicians, including Lowell Mason and George F. Root. In 1852, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he worked as a music teacher and organist at the First Baptist Church. Doane's career as a composer began in earnest in the 1860s, when he began publishing his own music. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled composer of hymns and other sacred music, and his works were widely performed in churches throughout the United States. One of Doane's most famous works is the hymn "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," which he composed in 1868. The hymn, which is still popular today, has been translated into many languages and has been performed by countless musicians over the years. Doane also composed a number of other hymns and sacred songs, including "Rescue the Perishing," "To God Be the Glory," and "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior." His music was known for its simple, yet powerful melodies and its ability to inspire and uplift listeners. In addition to his work as a composer, Doane was also a skilled organist and pianist. He served as the organist at several churches throughout his career, including the Central Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York, and the Hanson Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn. In 1887, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Denison University in Ohio, and in 1892, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London. He once said, "I have always felt that the highest mission of music is to inspire and uplift the soul, and to lead it to the contemplation of the divine." William H.
