He was the son of two musicians, his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Grigoriu grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. He attended the National University of Music in Bucharest, where he studied composition with Mihail Jora and piano with Florica Musicescu. His first major composition was the opera "The Legend of the Enchanted Forest," which premiered in 1969 at the National Opera in Bucharest. He also composed a number of ballets, including "The Nutcracker" and "Romeo and Juliet," which were performed by the Romanian National Ballet.
