Paulo Rios Filho was a Brazilian classical music composer who was born on August 12, 1955, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was the son of a musician and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Rios Filho began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later attended the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied composition with the renowned Brazilian composer, Marlos Nobre. After completing his studies, Rios Filho began his career as a composer, and quickly gained recognition for his innovative and expressive compositions. His music was characterized by its use of Brazilian rhythms and melodies, combined with elements of classical music. One of Rios Filho's early works, "Sinfonia Brasileira," was premiered in 1980 by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. The piece was a fusion of Brazilian folk music and classical music, and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1982, Rios Filho was awarded a scholarship to study at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts, where he studied with the American composer, Leonard Bernstein. During his time at Tanglewood, Rios Filho was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and techniques, which had a profound influence on his own compositions. After returning to Brazil, Rios Filho continued to compose and perform, and his music continued to gain popularity both in Brazil and abroad. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious Villa-Lobos Prize for his composition, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." Throughout his career, Rios Filho composed a wide range of works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and vocal music. His music was characterized by its emotional intensity, its use of Brazilian rhythms and melodies, and its incorporation of elements of classical music. One of Rios Filho's most famous works is his "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1995 by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. The piece was written for the Brazilian guitarist, Paulo Bellinati, and is considered one of the most important works in the guitar repertoire. Another notable work by Rios Filho is his "Sinfonia dos Orixás," which was premiered in 2001 by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. The piece was inspired by the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, and incorporates elements of traditional Candomblé music into a classical symphonic form. Rios Filho's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he is considered one of the most important Brazilian composers of the 20th century. His music continues to be performed and recorded today, and his legacy as a composer and musician lives on.
