He was the youngest of three children born to Roy Redgrave, a well-known actor, and Margaret Scudamore, an actress. He was a gifted pianist and quickly gained recognition for his talent. In 1928, he made his debut as a soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. In 1932, he formed a piano duo with his sister, Margaret, and together they performed throughout Europe and the United States.
