Johannes Knecht was born on May 15, 1985, in Berlin, Germany. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Knecht showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. Knecht's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of six. Knecht continued to study with his father until he was accepted into the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin at the age of 16. At the Hochschule, Knecht studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue Klaus Hellwig. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation, winning numerous awards and competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Warsaw and the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna. Knecht's talent and dedication to his craft led to numerous opportunities to perform around the world. He made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic at the age of 21, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. The performance was a resounding success, and Knecht was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the years, Knecht has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Muti, and Zubin Mehta. Knecht's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. He is particularly known for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which he has performed in their entirety in numerous concerts around the world. In addition to his performances, Knecht is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is also a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. Knecht's talent and dedication to his craft have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, which is given every four years to a pianist who demonstrates exceptional talent and dedication to the piano. The award comes with a cash prize of $300,000, which Knecht used to establish a foundation to support young musicians. In 2015, Knecht was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a citizen of Berlin. The award recognizes Knecht's contributions to the cultural life of the city and his dedication to promoting classical music around the world. Despite his many accomplishments, Knecht remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach, and he is always looking for new ways to inspire and educate young musicians. His passion for music is infectious, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his generation.
