Deal attended the University of North Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Michigan. During his time at these institutions, Deal studied with some of the most prominent percussionists of the time, including Leigh Howard Stevens, Michael Udow, and Robert Schietroma. After completing his studies, Deal began his career as a percussionist and composer. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative compositions. In 1990, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin, where he currently serves as a professor of percussion. Throughout his career, Deal has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world.
