The Orchestra of Flanders is a classical music ensemble based in Belgium. Founded in 2008, the orchestra has quickly established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the country, known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The idea for the Orchestra of Flanders was first conceived by conductor and pianist Jan Latham-Koenig, who had previously served as the music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Orchestre National de Montpellier. Latham-Koenig was inspired by the rich musical heritage of Flanders, a region that encompasses parts of Belgium, the Netherlands, and France, and he saw an opportunity to create an ensemble that would showcase this heritage to the world. With the support of the Flemish government, Latham-Koenig founded the Orchestra of Flanders in 2008. The ensemble's inaugural concert took place on September 26 of that year, with Latham-Koenig conducting a program that included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. Since its founding, the Orchestra of Flanders has attracted some of the most talented musicians from around the world. The ensemble's core members are drawn from the top orchestras in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In addition to its core members, the orchestra also collaborates with a wide range of guest artists, including soloists, conductors, and composers. One of the hallmarks of the Orchestra of Flanders is its commitment to innovative programming. The ensemble is known for its eclectic repertoire, which includes both classical masterpieces and lesser-known works from the Baroque, Romantic, and contemporary periods. The orchestra has also commissioned numerous new works from leading composers, including Magnus Lindberg, Mark-Anthony Turnage, and Thierry Escaich. Over the years, the Orchestra of Flanders has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in Europe and beyond. The ensemble has appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna, among many others. The orchestra has also toured extensively, with performances in Asia, North America, and South America. One of the highlights of the Orchestra of Flanders' career came in 2014, when the ensemble was invited to perform at the BBC Proms in London. The Proms is an annual festival of classical music that takes place over several weeks in the summer, and it is widely regarded as one of the most important events in the classical music calendar. The Orchestra of Flanders' performance at the Proms was a major success, with critics praising the ensemble's precision, energy, and musicality. In addition to its many performances, the Orchestra of Flanders has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2012, the ensemble was named "Orchestra of the Year" by the Belgian music magazine Klara. The following year, the orchestra won the prestigious ECHO Klassik award for its recording of the complete symphonies of Robert Schumann. The ensemble has also been praised for its educational and outreach programs, which aim to bring classical music to a wider audience and inspire the next generation of musicians. Today, the Orchestra of Flanders continues to be one of the most dynamic and innovative ensembles in the classical music world.
