August Wilhelmj was a German violinist and composer who lived from 21 September 1845 to 22 January 1908. He was born in Usingen, a small town in the state of Hesse, Germany. His father was a music teacher, and August showed an early interest in music. He began playing the violin at the age of six and was soon recognized as a prodigy. August's father recognized his son's talent and began teaching him himself. He also arranged for August to study with some of the best violin teachers in Germany. August's talent continued to grow, and by the age of 12, he was already performing in public concerts. In 1862, August Wilhelmj moved to Leipzig to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. There, he studied with some of the most famous musicians of the time, including Ferdinand David, who was a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn. August's talent continued to impress his teachers, and he soon became one of the most promising young musicians in Germany. After completing his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory, August Wilhelmj began his career as a professional musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the best violinists in Germany, and he was soon in demand as a soloist. He performed in concerts all over Europe, and his performances were always well-received. In addition to his career as a performer, August Wilhelmj was also a composer. He wrote a number of works for the violin, including several concertos and sonatas. His compositions were well-regarded by his contemporaries, and they continue to be performed today. One of August Wilhelmj's most famous compositions is his arrangement of the second movement of Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major. This arrangement, which is known as "Air on the G String," is one of the most famous pieces of classical music ever written. August Wilhelmj's career as a performer and composer continued to flourish throughout the 1870s and 1880s.
