Role:ComposerTexu Kim is a South Korean composer who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born in 1985 in Seoul, Kim showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later went on to study composition at the Seoul National University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 2008. After completing his studies in South Korea, Kim moved to the United States to pursue further education in music. He enrolled in the composition program at Indiana University, where he earned his Master's degree in 2011. During his time at Indiana University, Kim had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned composers in the world, including David Dzubay and Sven-David Sandström. Kim's early works were heavily influenced by his Korean heritage, and he often incorporated traditional Korean instruments and melodies into his compositions. One of his most notable early works is "Chanting," a piece for string quartet that was inspired by the Korean Buddhist chanting tradition. The piece was premiered in 2007 and has since been performed by numerous ensembles around the world. In 2012, Kim was awarded the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which allowed him to continue his studies at the Yale School of Music. While at Yale, Kim began to experiment with new techniques and styles, incorporating elements of jazz and rock music into his compositions. One of his most notable works from this period is "Buzzing Recreation," a piece for orchestra that features a prominent electric guitar solo. Kim's music has been performed by some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also been commissioned to write works for a variety of organizations, including the Kronos Quartet, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Youth Symphony. In recent years, Kim has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, incorporating elements of pop culture and technology into his compositions. One of his most recent works, "Bounce!!," is a piece for orchestra and video game controllers that allows the audience to interact with the music in real time. The piece was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2018 and has since been performed by several other orchestras around the world.
