Robert A. Hobby is a renowned American composer, conductor, and organist. He was born on May 31, 1962, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to a family of musicians. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a choir director. From a young age, Hobby was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Hobby's musical education began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. During his time at Eastman, Hobby studied with renowned organist and composer David Craighead. After completing his studies, Hobby began his career as a church musician. He served as the organist and choirmaster at several churches in North Carolina, including St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte and Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. In 1994, he was appointed as the director of music at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, South Carolina, where he served for over 20 years. Throughout his career, Hobby has composed numerous works for choir, organ, and other instruments. His compositions are known for their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and thoughtful texts. Many of his works are inspired by his faith and his experiences as a church musician. One of Hobby's most well-known works is his setting of the hymn "O God, Our Help in Ages Past." This piece, written for choir and organ, is a powerful and uplifting anthem that has become a staple in many church services. Another popular work is his "Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis," a setting of the canticles for choir and organ that is often performed during choral evensong services. In addition to his work as a composer, Hobby is also an accomplished conductor and organist. He has conducted numerous choirs, including the Trinity Cathedral Choir, the Charlotte Symphony Chorus, and the North Carolina Master Chorale. As an organist, he has performed in venues across the United States and Europe, including the Washington National Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Hobby's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Fellow of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) designation, which is given to organists who have made significant contributions to the field. He has also been awarded the AGO's Choir Master Award and the Distinguished Composer Award. Today, Hobby continues to compose, conduct, and perform music. He is currently the director of music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he leads a vibrant music program that includes a choir, orchestra, and handbell ensemble. His music continues to inspire and uplift audiences around the world, and his legacy as a composer and musician is sure to endure for generations to come.
