Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1958, Watchorn showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Melbourne, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Watchorn's passion for music led him to pursue further studies in Europe, where he studied with some of the most distinguished musicians of his time. He studied harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam and with Kenneth Gilbert in Paris. He also studied organ with Marie-Claire Alain in Paris and with Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini in Bologna. Watchorn's talent as a performer quickly became evident, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals and concert halls around the world. He has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also given recitals at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Watchorn's performances have been widely praised for their technical brilliance, musical sensitivity, and interpretive depth. He is particularly renowned for his performances of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, which he has recorded extensively. His recordings of Bach's keyboard works have been hailed as some of the finest ever made, and have won numerous awards, including a Grammy nomination. In addition to his work as a performer, Watchorn is also a respected scholar and educator.
