He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. Vazzana began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Vazzana attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied composition with Ludmila Ulehla and piano with Constance Keene. He later earned a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions. Vazzana's early works were influenced by the serialist techniques of his teachers, but he soon developed his own unique style. His music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and a wide range of instrumental colors. One of Vazzana's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1977. The symphony is a large-scale work in four movements and showcases Vazzana's mastery of orchestration and form. The piece was well-received by critics and established Vazzana as a major figure in contemporary classical music. Vazzana's other orchestral works include his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, which was premiered by the American Symphony Orchestra in 1982, and his Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1990. In addition to his orchestral works, Vazzana also composed chamber music, vocal music, and works for solo instruments. His String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet in 1973, is a particularly notable example of his chamber music. Vazzana was also a respected educator and taught at several institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to reach their full potential. Tragically, Vazzana's life was cut short when he died of cancer on December 31, 1997, at the age of 51. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the many students he inspired throughout his career. In conclusion, Anthony Vazzana was a highly respected composer of classical music who made significant contributions to the genre. His music is characterized by its complexity and originality, and his works continue to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences alike.
