Maud Gnidzaz was born on May 12, 1985, in Paris, France. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Maud showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later started playing the violin and the viola, which became her primary instrument. Maud's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Conservatoire de Paris, where she studied under the guidance of renowned violists such as Gérard Caussé and Tabea Zimmermann. She also studied chamber music with the Ysaÿe Quartet and the Ébène Quartet. In 2005, Maud won first prize at the Maurice Vieux International Viola Competition in Paris, which launched her career as a soloist. She went on to perform with major orchestras such as the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Maud's performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. She was particularly known for her interpretation of contemporary music, and she premiered works by composers such as Kaija Saariaho, György Kurtág, and Pascal Dusapin. In 2010, Maud was awarded the Victoire de la Musique Classique, the most prestigious award for classical music in France. She was also named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of her contributions to the arts. Maud continued to perform and record throughout the 2010s, collaborating with musicians such as pianist Alexandre Tharaud and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. She also became a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, where she taught a new generation of violists. Tragically, Maud's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. She passed away on January 16, 2020, at the age of 34. Her death was mourned by the classical music community, who remembered her as a brilliant musician and a kind and generous person. Maud Gnidzaz's legacy lives on through her recordings and the students she taught. She remains an inspiration to violists and musicians around the world, who continue to be moved by her artistry and passion for music.
