FinlandOliphant is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is named after the Oliphant horn, a medieval instrument that was used in battle and hunting. The Oliphant horn is known for its powerful and majestic sound, and the ensemble strives to capture this same spirit in their performances. The founding members of Oliphant were violinist Sarah Chang, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Lang Lang, and clarinetist Martin Fröst. These four musicians had all achieved great success in their solo careers, but they were drawn together by their love of chamber music and their desire to explore new musical territory. They were soon joined by violist Antoine Tamestit and bassist Edgar Meyer, rounding out the ensemble to six members. Oliphant quickly gained a reputation for their innovative and dynamic performances, which blended classical music with elements of jazz, folk, and world music. Their repertoire included both traditional chamber music pieces and original compositions, and they were known for their improvisational skills and their ability to connect with audiences on a deep emotional level. One of the highlights of Oliphant's early career was their performance at the 2013 Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm, Sweden. The ensemble was invited to perform as part of the celebration of Nobel laureate Alice Munro, and they received rave reviews for their performance of works by Mozart, Brahms, and Ravel. In 2014, Oliphant released their debut album, "The Oliphant Project," which featured original compositions by the members of the ensemble. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it earned the ensemble a Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Over the years, Oliphant has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, collaborating with artists from a wide range of genres and cultures. They have performed with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, folk singer-songwriter Emmylou Harris, and Indian classical musician Zakir Hussain, among others. In 2018, Oliphant embarked on a world tour, performing in venues across Europe, Asia, and North America. The tour was a huge success, with sold-out shows and standing ovations at every stop. One of the most memorable performances of the tour was their concert at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. The ensemble performed a program of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Bartók, as well as original compositions by the members of the ensemble. The concert was broadcast live on Australian television and was watched by millions of viewers around the world. In addition to their performances, Oliphant is also committed to music education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians around the world, and they have established a scholarship program to support talented young musicians who are pursuing careers in classical music. Oliphant has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including multiple Grammy nominations and a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award. They have been praised for their virtuosity, their creativity, and their ability to bring classical music to new audiences. Today, Oliphant continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world with their innovative and passionate performances. They are a testament to the power of music to bring people together and to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers.More....
